Health Risks of Aluminum Foil: Do you also use aluminum foil to keep food, know what danger you are putting your family in?

Is Aluminum Foil Safe for Food Storage: Do you also keep cooked food in aluminum foil or aluminum containers? In most homes, it is common to use aluminum foil for wrapping leftover rotis, covering vegetables or packing tiffins. This seems to be an easy, light and quick method. But have you ever wondered how safe this habit is for your health? Let us tell you about it in detail.

What harm does this do?

According to a study published in the Food Bioscience journal in December 2024, when fish was roasted in aluminum foil at high temperatures, the metal from the foil went inside the fish. The researchers found that the more foil was used, the more metal was found in the food.

In another study, it was seen how much aluminum foil affects the food during baking. It was found that the amount of aluminum in many food items like salmon, mackerel, chicken, pork, tomato and cheese increased by 40 times.

What do experts say?

In this case, doctors say that misuse of aluminum foil and containers can become a health hazard. According to experts, aluminum especially reacts with sour, salty and spicy foods like tomato, lemon, vinegar, pickles and gravy. When such food is stored or cooked in foil or aluminum utensils, the metal can leach into the food.

Doctors warn that consuming too much aluminum in the body over a long period of time can cause bone problems, pressure on the kidneys and nerve-related problems. This risk increases further in kidney patients.

Raipur’s well-known oncologist and cancer surgeon Dr Jayesh Sharma had drawn attention to this issue by sharing a video on social media. In the caption of the video, he wrote, “How safe is it to wrap hot roti in aluminum foil and how harmful? We use it every day to pack lunch and store food. But it is also under discussion that when aluminum is heated, can it mix with food and harm the kidneys.”

How to keep food safe?

According to experts, avoid aluminum foil or containers for daily cooking or long-term storage. For this, do not keep sour, salty and spicy food in foil, keep cooked food in steel, glass or ceramic utensils and if you use foil in baking or grilling, then put butter paper or baking paper between the food and the foil. Apart from this, do not reuse disposable aluminum containers.

Always keep one thing in mind that do not get influenced by the trends seen on social media and adopt wrong methods of storing food. There is a need to be very careful in health related matters. Choose a safe option for yourself and your family only with the right information and expert advice.
