How to get a job in merchant navy
To get a job in Merchant Navy, first of all, after 10th or 12th, it is necessary to do deck, engine or GP rating course as per your interest from an institute approved by Directorate General of Shipping. For a degree course, one usually has to pass the entrance examination of Indian Maritime University. After completing the course and medical fitness, CDC (Continuous Discharge Certificate) is made, then selection is made through application or campus placement in shipping companies, after which the job starts on the ship as a trainee or cadet.

How to make a career in Merchant Navy after 12th?
1. GP Rating Course – If you want to start a job quickly, the GP Rating Course is an entry-level option that lasts about 6 months and can be done after 10th or 12th. After this course you can start working as an assistant in the deck or engine department of a ship.
2. Deck Department – If your interest is in sailing and navigation, then you can go to the deck department, for which Diploma in Nautical Science (1 year) or B.Sc. in Nautical Science (3 years) is done. Career in this field starts with deck cadet and on the basis of experience and examinations, you can become Third Officer, Second Officer and later on you can become Captain.
3. Engine Department – If you are interested in machines, engines and technical work, then Engine Department i.e. Marine Engineering is a better option for you. For this, 4 years B.Tech in Marine Engineering can be done or if you already have an engineering degree, you can do 1 year Graduate Marine Engineering (GME) course. In this department, you can start from Junior Engineer and reach Chief Engineer through experience and promotion.
4. Electro Technical Officer – If you have studied electrical or electronics, then by doing ETO course you can handle the responsibility of electronic systems on the ship.
How much salary do you get?
Merchant Navy is considered a high-paid career option, but the salary depends on the post, experience and type of ship. Initially when a candidate joins as Deck Cadet, GP Rating or Junior Engineer, his salary usually ranges between Rs 30,000 to Rs 60,000 per month. As experience increases and the person reaches officer rank, the salary can range from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 3 lakh per month. Whereas if someone reaches a top position like Captain or Chief Engineer, his monthly income can be Rs 8 lakh to Rs 15 lakh or even more.
