Japan Approves Stem Cell Therapy For Parkinson’s: Taking a big step in the field of medical science, Japan has approved a new stem cell based therapy. This therapy has been developed to treat Parkinson’s disease and severe heart failure. According to media reports and related companies, after these treatments are approved, it is expected that patients may start getting their benefits in the coming few months.
How will it work?
Pharmaceutical company Sumitomo Pharma said that it has received permission to manufacture and sell its Parkinson’s disease treatment Amchepry. In this treatment, stem cells are transplanted into the patient’s brain, in which an attempt is made to reactivate those cells in the brain which are destroyed due to the disease. Apart from this, the Health Ministry of Japan has also approved another technology named ReHeart. This treatment has been developed by medical startup Cuorips, in which special sheets of heart muscles are prepared. These sheets help in the formation of new blood vessels in the body and can improve the functioning of the heart.
When will it come in the market?
According to reports, these treatments may be available in the market by summer this year. If this happens, it will be the world’s first commercial medical product in which cells will be used. Japanese scientist Shinya Yamanaka received the Nobel Prize in 2012 for research on this technology. The specialty of IPS cells is that they can be converted into any type of cells in the body, which increases the possibilities of treating many diseases.

relief for patients
Japan’s Health Minister Kenichiro Ueno said that he hopes that this treatment will bring relief not only to patients in Japan but also to patients around the world. He said that the government will ensure that this treatment is delivered to the patients soon after completing all the necessary procedures. According to Sumitomo Pharma, Amchepry has currently been given conditional and time-limited approval. This means that it will be considered a kind of temporary license, so that new technology can reach patients quickly. For this approval, safety and effectiveness have been evaluated on the basis of data from limited patients instead of large clinical trials like traditional medicines.
Is it safe?
In a study conducted by researchers from Kyoto University, this therapy was declared safe. Seven Parkinson’s patients aged 50 to 69 years were included in this trial. About 5 to 10 million stem cells were transplanted into the patients’ brains. During two years of monitoring, no serious side effects were reported and symptoms improved in four patients. Parkinson’s disease is a chronic neurological disease that affects body movement and often causes tremors and difficulty walking. About one crore people around the world are affected by this disease.
