Doctors say that frequent use of pain killers can prove dangerous for health. According to the doctor, kidney is a very important part of our body. It filters dirt and extra fluid from the blood, maintains electrolyte balance in the body and helps in controlling blood pressure. Many medicines are removed from the body through the kidneys. Therefore, taking medicines in large quantities can put extra pressure on the kidneys. NSAIDs medicines can increase the risk
According to experts, the group of painkillers most associated with kidney-related problems is non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs i.e. NSAIDs. This includes commonly used medicines Ibuprofen, Diclofenac and Naproxen. This medicine provides relief by reducing the chemicals that cause pain and swelling in the body. However, these medicines reduce the substance called prostaglandin present in the body which helps in maintaining proper blood flow to the kidneys. When prostaglandin levels decrease, blood flow to the kidneys may also decrease. Due to which kidney function may be affected in the long run. Some doctors say that the kidneys work to filter medicines and other waste materials from the blood. In such a situation, when medicines are used excessively, the kidneys have to work harder and this increases the risk of medicine-related harm.
Which people are at greater risk?
According to the doctor, some people have a higher risk of kidney damage from pain killers. These include the elderly, patients already suffering from kidney disease and people with diabetes or high blood pressure. Apart from this, lack of water in the body i.e. dehydration can also increase the risk for kidneys. Because the kidneys need adequate fluid and blood circulation to function properly. In some cases, the risk increases when pain killer medicines are taken along with blood pressure or heart related medicines. For example, taking NSAIDs with ACE inhibitors or diuretics can have additional effects on kidney function.
What is the safe option?
The doctor says that taking pain killer medicines repeatedly affects the kidneys, this does not mean that pain killer medicines should be completely abandoned. Instead, their use is considered safe in the right quantity and with doctor’s advice. Commonly used claims paracetamol is considered relatively safe for the kidneys, although taking it in large amounts can cause liver damage. In cases of prolonged pain, the doctor may also prescribe medicines like Tramadol or Tapentadol, but these are usually used only under the supervision of the doctor.
