Do Overweight People Need More Vitamin C: Vitamin C has long been considered an essential nutrient for our body. Generally people associate it with prevention of cold and cough and strengthening immunity. But now new research is showing that the importance of Vitamin C may be much more than this, especially for those people who are overweight. Let us tell you what came out in the research regarding this.
What came out in the research?
Researchers from the University of Otago, New Zealand, in their study, published in the journal Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition, found that overweight people may need more vitamin C than current health standards. This result is also important because cases of obesity are increasing rapidly around the world and many people may unknowingly be suffering from the deficiency of this essential nutrient. Vitamin C plays many important roles in the body. It repairs tissue, strengthens the immune system and acts as an antioxidant, protecting the body from damage caused by free radicals. Apart from this, it is also important for skin, wound healing and mental health.

Advice on taking the right amount
Health guidelines generally recommend a certain amount for all people. For example, in New Zealand the recommended daily intake of vitamin C is 45 mg, which is based on a healthy person weighing approximately 70 kg. However, Anitra Carr, the lead researcher of this study, says that this one-size-fits-all approach cannot be right. As body weight increases, the need for vitamin C may also increase.
What came out in the research?
Research has found that for every additional 10 kg of weight, the body may need about 17 to 22 mg of additional vitamin C. That means, people who are overweight should take these nutrients in more quantity as per their requirement. To reach this conclusion, scientists analyzed data from two large studies, which included thousands of participants.
The results showed that most people appeared to have adequate levels of vitamin C based on current recommendations, but when weight was taken into account, only one-third to half of people had adequate levels. Experts believe that in obesity, there is mild swelling in the body, due to which Vitamin C is spent rapidly. This is the reason why its deficiency can occur quickly in overweight people.
How can it be replenished in the body?
The good thing is that vitamin C is easy to supplement. Fruits and vegetables like orange, kiwi, strawberry and capsicum are good sources of it. Small changes, like eating one or two extra fruits daily, can help make up for this deficiency.
