Karnataka Third Language: An interesting thing has come to light amid the ongoing debate regarding language in Karnataka. The discussion of ‘imposing Hindi’ has its place, but school statistics seem to tell a different story. In this academic session, about 93 percent students of the state board have chosen Hindi as their third language.
According to reports, this year around 8.1 lakh students chose third language. Of these, more than 7.5 lakh students chose Hindi under the general curriculum. Apart from this, 4,778 students studied Hindi through NCERT curriculum in Adarsh schools. In this way, overall about 7.6 lakh students are learning Hindi.
Compared to Hindi, very few students chose other languages. Kannada was chosen as the third language by 11,483 students, while English was chosen by 32,135 students. Urdu was adopted by 5,544 students and Sanskrit by 5,159 students. Only 361 students chose Arabic language. The number in regional languages was also very low, Tulu was chosen by 845 students, Konkani by 34 and Marathi by only 3 students.
Impact of change in policy
The new policy of the state government is also believed to be an important reason behind this change. Earlier in SSLC exam, there were 100 marks for the third language, which added to the total of 625 marks. Now this system has been changed. Marks of third language will not be included in the total result. Instead, students will be given grades like A, B, C and D.
Let us tell you that last month, State School Education and Literacy Department Minister Madhu Bangarappa had said that this new grading system will be applicable to all third languages. Teachers believe that this change has reduced the pressure of marks on students. Now they are choosing such a language which they can easily understand and learn.
teachers’ opinion
Teachers in the state say that after the introduction of the new policy, it has become easier for students to choose the language. After the implementation of the third language policy, it was natural that most of the students would choose Hindi, as it is considered one of the major languages.
