- The decision on free channels may come on 8 May 2026.
Free TV Channels: Smart TV in India has completely changed the way people watch TV. Now people are able to watch hundreds of channels easily just on the basis of internet connection. But now a big question has arisen whether this facility will continue for a long time or not.
Why may the era of free channels end?
According to recently revealed information, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India i.e. TRAI is considering whether smart TV apps should also be brought under the ambit of rules like DTH and cable. The final decision on this matter may come on May 4, 2026. If this happens, many TV channels that were available free till now may have to be charged.
How many people will be affected?
It is being told that more than 13 crore people in India are watching more than 150 channels for free through smart TV without any cable or DTH connection. These users just need internet and some apps through which they can easily access news, entertainment, sports and many other types of channels.
What is the difference between DTH and smart TV?
While on one hand DTH and cable companies charge money by making packages for each channel, on the other hand many channels are available on smart TV apps without any extra charge. DTH companies have to pay huge fees to the government and have to follow strict rules whereas such rules are not yet applicable on smart TV apps. This is why efforts are now being made to eliminate this inequality.
Will all users be affected?
Although this change seems big, it does not necessarily affect every user. Nowadays, most people use smart TV for platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and YouTube. Many users use TV only for OTT content or gaming and are not even aware of free channels.
In the coming time, it may be difficult to watch free channels on smart TV, but it will not affect everyone. The decision of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India will decide how much the TV watching experience is going to change in India.
