The centers created with the aim of taking higher education to every village have now themselves come under question. The extremely low number of students in the sub-centres of Mumbai University in Ratnagiri, Kalyan and Sindhudurg has raised questions not only on the education system but also on the success of the schemes.

Statistics of the last three years show that compared to the number of seats available in these centres, very few students are taking admission. The situation is such that many classrooms are lying vacant, while crores of rupees have been spent in making them.

According to the report of Indian Express, this matter came to light in the Senate meeting of Mumbai University held on March 14. The data presented during the meeting surprised everyone. The situation at Ratnagiri center is of most concern. Here, out of total 120 seats, only 10 students took admission in the 2024-25 session. If we look at the past years, the decline is clearly visible. 53 students were enrolled in 2022-23, which reduced to 13 in 2023-24 and now to only 10 in 2024-25.

Old center, still empty

Ratnagiri Center is considered to be the oldest sub-centre of Mumbai University. It was established in 1989, but studies started here from 2004-05. If students are not coming here even after such a long time, then this situation is considered even more serious.

The condition of the welfare center is also not better.

The sub-centre built in Kalyan is also lagging behind in attracting students. Here too there are a total of 120 seats, but only 11 students took admission in 2024-25. This number was even lower in the last two years. Only 10 students were admitted in 2023-24 and only 9 students were admitted in 2022-23. Interestingly, the nearby Thane center has a good number of students. This raises the question as to why such problems are occurring only in some centres.

A little better in Sindhudurg, but not satisfactory

The condition of Sindhudurg center is definitely a little better, but it also cannot be called good. Here, against 80 seats, only 37 students took admission in 2024-25. Two courses are being run here. Masters in Social Work (MSW) and MSc IT. But statistics show that students are more interested only in MSW course. In 2023-24, 27 students had taken admission, out of which 21 were in MSW and only 6 were in MSc IT. Whereas in 2022-23, 29 students took admission and all were of MSW, whereas not a single student came in IT course.
