What Diseases Are Caused By Contaminated Water: The audit conducted under the Namami Gange program in Uttarakhand has revealed many serious concerns regarding the condition of the Ganga river. According to the CAG report, the amount of coliform bacteria in the Ganga water between Devprayag and Haridwar was found to have increased by about 32 times. Apart from this, many sewage treatment plants are not following the standards set by the National Green Tribunal (NGT). The report also revealed that about 32 percent of STPs are releasing untreated sewage directly into the Ganga. This audit was conducted during the review of the implementation of Namami Gange program in Uttarakhand between 2018 to 2023. This report was presented in the Uttarakhand Assembly held in Gairsain during the budget session.
What is mentioned in the report?
It was also told in the report that many parts of this scheme could not be implemented properly in the cities situated on the banks of Ganga. Some of the cremation grounds built under the State Clean Ganga Mission are being utilized very little because adequate awareness about it was not spread among the people. Apart from this, expected progress could not be made in the works related to afforestation under the project. According to the report, out of the expenditure earmarked for the scheme, only about 16 percent could be effectively utilised.

What diseases does it cause?
According to the World Health Organization, the UN’s specialized health agency, contaminated water and poor sanitation can cause the spread of many serious diseases. These include diseases like cholera, diarrhea, dysentery, hepatitis A, typhoid and polio. If water and sanitation services are inadequate or poorly managed, people may face a number of health risks. This problem becomes even more serious in health care institutions, because there the risk of infection increases for both patients and health workers.
According to statistics, out of every 100 patients, about 7 patients in hospitals of developed countries and about 15 patients in hospitals of low and middle income countries become victims of some infection during treatment. A major reason for this is also considered to be the lack of facilities related to water and sanitation.
Why is water getting contaminated?
WHO report said that due to lack of proper management of dirty water coming out of urban, industrial and agricultural areas, drinking water of crores of people is getting polluted. Sometimes chemicals naturally present in groundwater can prove to be hazardous to health. For example, elements like arsenic and fluoride can be found in groundwater. Some chemicals, such as lead, can also get into drinking water through contact with the water supply system.
