Solar Powered Drone: India has taken another big step in the field of pilotless defense technology. The Indian Army is now going to include the country’s first solar energy-powered spy drone in its fleet. For this, the Army has signed an agreement worth about Rs 168 crore. This modern surveillance system has been developed by Bengaluru-based company New Space Research and Technologies, which has been prepared under the iDEX Innovation Program of the Defense Ministry.
What is MAPSS system?
This drone system has been named Medium Altitude Persistent Surveillance System (MAPSS). The special thing is that this drone flies with solar power, due to which it can remain in the air for many hours without stopping. Till now, the drones used by the army were dependent on batteries or fuel, due to which their flight duration was limited. MAPSS overcomes this shortcoming to a great extent.
A long and constant eye on the borders
The army will use this solar drone for intelligence gathering, surveillance and reconnaissance missions. Be it the high mountain ranges of the North or the desert areas of the West, MAPSS can monitor a single area for a long period of time. With this, it will be possible to keep an eye on every activity happening on the border without any interruption.
Less noise, less heat, more privacy
According to defense officials, this drone runs on electric power, so its noise is very low and it produces less heat. This is the reason why it becomes difficult for the enemy to identify and track it. Apart from this, it will also help in supporting communication system in remote areas and identifying targets during operations.
Successful tests have already been done
MAPSS builds on New Space’s already ongoing high-altitude solar drone projects. The company has previously tested a platform that could remain in the air for more than 24 hours at an altitude of more than 26,000 feet. These tests were conducted at the Aeronautical Test Range located in Chitradurga. MAPSS developed for the Army has been modified for medium altitude and has also been tested in actual operational areas.
Big plan to increase drone power
This deal is part of the army’s broader strategy, under which drone capabilities are being rapidly expanded. After Operation Sindoor, the Army has purchased many unmanned systems including loitering munitions and surveillance drones, the total cost of which is said to be more than Rs 5,000 crore. More approvals are expected in the coming time, while preparations are also underway for a major drone procurement program in 2026.
Will compensate for the shortcomings of the existing drone system
MAPSS has been designed to work with existing long-range drones. It will stay relatively close to the ground and monitor those areas where constant monitoring is necessary. Its ability to remain in one location for long periods of time gives commanders a clearer picture of the situation, all without endangering the unmanned aircraft.
Growing role of indigenous startups
This agreement also indicates that Indian startups are now playing an important role in the defense sector. Through programs like iDEX, the government is giving opportunities to new companies to develop technology as per the needs of the army. This is a big achievement for New Space whereas the Army has got a modern equipment which is completely based on indigenous technology.
New preparations for future war
Drones and unmanned systems are becoming very important in today’s modern warfare. In such a situation, by adopting solar-powered surveillance drones, India has made it clear that it is emphasizing on long flight capability, low cost and indigenous innovation. This technology will strengthen border security.
