Does Smoking Cause Hair Loss: Today a large number of people are troubled by the problem of hair fall. Many men accept it as a normal part of aging. But new information emerging now suggests that a common lifestyle habit in England can speed up hair fall and also cause premature graying of hair. Health experts say that smoking is not only harmful for the lungs and heart, but it can also damage the hair roots.
How does smoking damage hair?
Smoking tobacco can damage your hair roots and increase the risk of hair fall. Published in Wiley In the year 2020, a study conducted on men aged 20 to 35 years compared androgenetic alopecia i.e. male pattern baldness occurring at an early age between smokers and non-smokers. It was found that out of 500 smokers, 425 people had some level of hair fall problem, whereas among 500 non-smokers, this number was only 200. According to the Hamilton-Norwood scale, in Grade 3, the hairline recedes significantly and in Grade 4, clear baldness starts appearing on the upper part of the head. The research revealed that 47 percent of smokers had reached grade 3 and 24 percent had reached grade 4, while only 10 percent of non-smokers reached these levels. Researchers believe that nicotine and other chemicals present in tobacco can accelerate the process of hair loss, although further study is needed on this.
promote oxidative stress
Smoking increases oxidative stress in the body, that is, the amount of free radicals increases. These harmful particles can damage the DNA of body cells. Tobacco smoke, pollution and strong sunlight also have a similar effect. If the cells of the hair roots get damaged then hair growth is affected. Besides this, smoking cigarettes also weakens blood flow. Plaque starts accumulating in the blood vessels, due to which oxygen and nutrients do not reach the scalp in the right quantity. Due to this the hair becomes weak and starts breaking and falling. Apart from this, smoking can activate proteins that increase inflammation in the body, affect the balance of hormones and cause changes in the enzymes that control the hair growth cycle. All these reasons together can increase the problem of premature hair thinning and baldness.
