Why You Should Remove Stickers From Fruits: Carelessness regarding food items can sometimes prove costly. Recently, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has issued a warning regarding stickers on fruits and vegetables. They say that the adhesive used behind these stickers is not edible and can be harmful to health.

Often we ignore the stickers on fruits or vegetables while buying them from the market, but this small mistake can become a problem. According to experts, the glue, ink and other chemicals used in these stickers are not safe for the body. Therefore, it is very important to remove them before eating.

What is the problem?

Dr Brunda told The Indian Express that even if a small piece accidentally enters the body, it usually does not cause major harm, but it is also not completely safe. For some people, it may cause stomach irritation, confusion, mild nausea or digestive problems. Especially in children and elderly people, sometimes it can also increase the risk of getting stuck in the throat. Experts also say that if such chemicals are consumed for a long time, then its effect on the body can be seen gradually. Even though some gum is said to be food-grade, it does not necessarily mean that it can be consumed directly. Therefore, being cautious is the best solution.

What should you do?

The easiest way to avoid this risk is to wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly before eating them and remove all the stickers on them. If necessary, they can also be peeled and eaten, so that no absorption goes into the body. Apart from this, it is important to keep some other things in mind to keep fruits and vegetables clean. After bringing them home, keep them in a separate place, then wash them thoroughly with clean water. They can also be cleaned by mixing a small amount of chlorine in lukewarm water, but soap or any chemical cleaner should not be used.

Keep the fruits and vegetables that need to be kept cold in the refrigerator and the rest in an open crate or rack. Avoid keeping food items in the car or outside in the open. Keep the place where it was washed clean. Only small precautions can save you from major health problems.
