Dr Pramod Kadam told TOI that toilets have a specific purpose and the more time you spend there, the more unnecessary stress increases on the body. When you sit on a toilet seat, your rectum does not get the same support as a normal chair does. In such a situation, due to gravity, blood starts accumulating downwards and as time increases, the pressure also increases.

If you sit for more than 10 minutes, this pressure starts affecting your blood vessels. The most common result of this is piles. These are actually swollen veins of the anal canal, which can cause pain and bleeding.

Body’s natural systems are also affected

But the problem does not end here, experts say that while using the phone, the natural systems of our body also get affected. When you get lost in the screen, you ignore the body’s early signals. Due to this, the stool remains in the colon for a long time, becomes dry and becomes difficult to come out. This is the reason why problems like constipation, piles and anal fissure increase.

What is the way to escape?

Doctors also call it straining paradox. That is, even though you are not applying pressure intentionally, sitting for a long time continues to exert slight pressure on the pelvic floor. This can cause cracks in the delicate lining of the anal canal, which is called fissure and is quite painful. The easiest way to avoid this is the 5 minute rule. According to Dr. Kadam, if the work is not completed in 5 minutes, then one should get up and try again later. It is not right to use the toilet as a library or office.

Without any distraction, you will be able to understand your body’s signals better and will not spend more time than necessary. Apart from this, the way of sitting also matters. Doctors also advise to never ignore body signals, drink enough water and eat fiber-rich food. These small habits together save us from big problems.
